February 18, 2013For the fourth time this season, junior Jerica Coley has been named Sun Belt Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week, as voted on by the league's head coaches. The accolade marks the eighth of Coley's career, a total which establishes a new program record, while her four weekly selections in 2012-13 also set a school record.
This past week, Coley led FIU to a perfect 2-0 SBC ledger, as the Panthers handled Troy, 56-39, on the road on Thursday before defeating WKU, 72-53, at home on Saturday. The All-America candidate averaged 31.5 points per game across the two contests while shooting 54.8 percent from the field and 88.9 percent from the free throw line, as she posted 25 points against the Trojans and 38 points versus the Hilltoppers.
Coley, who leads the nation in scoring with an average of 25.9 points per game, has scored in double-figures in 24-consecutive games, registering 20-or-more points on 17 occasions and eclipsing the 30-point mark 11 times. For the week, the 5-foot-8 point guard also contributed 14 rebounds (7.0 rpg), six assists (3.0 apg), six steals (3.0 spg) and six blocks (3.0 bpg).
A native of St. Petersburg, Fla., Coley leads FIU in seven statistical categories - field goals made (240); three-point field goals made (26); free throws made (168); assists (91, 3.5 apg); blocks (47, 1.8 bpg); steals (55, 2.1 spg); and points (674, 25.9 ppg). The reigning SBC Player of the Year has been responsible for 41.9 percent of the Panthers' scoring efforts in 2012-13.
Coley currently ranks second on the FIU career charts for scoring average (21.4 ppg) and her career point total of 1,969 ranks third in program history.
FIU returns to action on Thursday, Feb. 21, when the Panthers close out their home schedule versus SBC foe UALR. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. from U.S. Century Bank Arena.
