February 21, 2013FIU football Head Coach Ron Turner has announced the hiring of Jason Brooks as the Panthers' new defensive secondary coach.
Brooks comes to FIU after spending the last four seasons with the Super Bowl XLVII Champion Baltimore Ravens. With Baltimore, Brooks served under Head Coach John Harbaugh as an assistant to the offense, offensive quality control and offensive assistant. His responsibilities included the coordination and coaching of the Ravens defensive scout team, assisting with the special teams scout squad, film breakdown, and self-scouting reports. As well as other duties assigned, Brooks worked first-hand in the coaching of the wide receivers in 2009 and 2011 and running backs in 2010 and 2012.
Prior to the Ravens, Brooks was the wide receivers coach at Norwich University in Northfield, Vt., during the 2008 season. At Norwich, Brooks coached in a no-huddle offense, as well as coached the gunners on the punt team and corners on the punt block team; assisted in coordinating the scout kickoff coverage and kickoff return teams; and coordinated and assisted in coaching the defensive scout team.
Brooks also served the Miami Dolphins in parts of 2007-08 as a scouting assistant. In that capacity, he was in charge of video library maintenance and logging all college and NFL film. He also utilized the team's video scouting tools to create film study for the player personnel department and coaching staff.
Also during the 2007 season, Brooks worked at the University of Massachusetts as an assistant defensive backs coach following a season as a student assistant coach at Middle Tennessee. With the Blue Raiders, Brooks worked with the running backs and special teams units. He was part of the staff that guided Middle Tennessee to the 2006 Sun Belt Championship and also played in the Motor City Bowl.
Brooks graduated from Middle Tennessee in 2006 where he earned a Bachelor's of Science in Physical Education, with an emphasis in Athletic Coaching. He also attended Cuyahoga Community College in Cleveland, Ohio.
Brooks' father, Clarence, is presently the defensive line coach for the Baltimore Ravens, where he just completed his eighth season. He has more than three decades of coaching experience, including stints with the Miami Dolphins, Chicago Bears and Cleveland Browns, as well as on the college level with Massachusetts, Arizona and Syracuse.
