Game Notes: MTSU
FIU travels to familiar-foe Middle Tennessee for a Conference USA East Division meeting on Saturday, Nov. 9, at Floyd Stadium in Murfreesboro. Kick-off with the Blue Raiders is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET. The game will be televised in the local South Florida market through FOX College Sports.
E.J. Hilliard will be the starting quarterback. Look for Hilliard to make more plays as he gets more comfortable with back to back starts. The big question mark will be how the offensive line will hold up and protect him.
Like many other FIU game this season, Saturday's Conference USA match-up at Middle Tennessee features two programs that were participant to the latest round of conference realignment with the Blue Raiders also coming over from the Sun Belt to C-USA. In total, seven of FIU's 11 FBS opponents in 2013 were involved in expansion, whether for this season or next.
Middle Tennessee rallied for a 24-21 road victory at UAB last Saturday. The Blue Raiders remain third in the East Division with a 3-2 league mark. Middle Tennessee tied the score, 21-21, at 1:50 in the fourth, and then kicked an 18-yard field goal with three seconds left in the game.
It has been an all-time long 36 days between road games for FIU. The Panthers last defeated Southern Miss, 24-23, in Hattiesburg on Oct. 5. Since, FIU hosted three home games and had its second bye week. Three of the final four regular season games will come on the road.
FIU-MIDDLE TENNESSEE: THE SERIES
The all-time series with Middle Tennessee began in 2005, when FIU joined the Sun Belt. The Blue Raiders own the on-field series advantage, 5-3 (5-2), with the 2005 victory later being vacated. Middle Tennessee Head Coach Rick Stockstill is 5-2 vs. FIU since 2006.
Although FIU Head Coach Ron Turner and Middle Tennessee Head Coach Rick Stockstill have yet to face each other during their respective careers, several FIU assistant coaches have, including Offensive Line Coach/Run-Game Coordinator Steve Shankweiler, Tight Ends/Tackles Coach Kort Shankweiler, Defensive Secondary Coach Jason Brooks and Special Teams Coach Kevin Wolthausen.
